In my field notes, I pondered the meaning
such characteristics symbolized with regards
to identity for early-career residential life practitioners. Data from a set of 18 semi-structured
interviews about perceptions of residential life
work provided a potential response.
When asked to distinguish between what
student affairs professionals do and who they
are, TUE's residential life administrators at all
levels consistently had difficulty answering the
question. Instead, they described the roles that
resembled aspects of both their identity and
their work responsibilities (Table 1). Of particular note regarding this summary was the
prevalence of hero imagery in administrators'
role descriptions. Perhaps more insightful was
the fact that the hero imagery was most prominent in responses by early-career practitioners,
RAs and RDs.
Using heroism as a lens to reanalyze the
data, the results pointed to a consistent and
articulated thread addressing the relationship
between emergency management and professional identities in residential life work for early-career practitioners. Further exploring this
thread, three significant themes with implications for theory and practice emerged: heroism
imparted, heroism internalized, and heroism lost.
