SELECTING RESIDENT ASSISTANTS is integral to the
success of housing operations on college and university
campuses. Recruiting high-performing student staff is
a priority in achieving departmental goals. Despite the
importance of this process and the amount of time and
resources expended during selection, there is scarce
research investigating the relationship between commonly
used selection processes and staff performance. Using two
years of data, this quantitative study combined interview
data from 74 resident assistant candidates and their
subsequent first-semester performance evaluation data.
The results showed that traditional multiple-component
selection processes fail to adequately predict future job
performance in new resident assistants. Implications and
recommendations for practitioners seeking to improve the
assessment of their selection process are discussed.

The start of the spring term marks the beginning of resident assistant (RA) recruitment season for most housing departments on
college and university campuses. To attract the best possible candidates for anticipated vacancies, selection process coordinators form
timelines, construct interview questions, and create comprehensive marketing plans. There are important responsibilities associated with the RA position (Blimling, 1998), making it one of the
most comprehensive roles within student affairs (Elleven, Allen, &
Wircenski, 2001). As a result, most campus housing departments
invest significant time and resources in the recruitment and selection process, with the goal of hiring the highest quality students to
serve as RAs. The process of selecting RAs often consists of some
combination of written applications, individual interviews, and
group interviews (Upcraft, 1982).

Using RA candidate interview data collected during the spring
semesters of 2013 and 2014 and the subsequent performance evaluation data collected in the fall semesters of both years, this study
sought to determine if traditional selection processes with multiple
components accurately predicted the performance of first-year RAs.
