interview, participants shared photographs
they took that represented concepts related
to safe/unsafe, support/lack of support, and
inclusion/exclusion. Narrative data related to
residence life, campus housing, off-campus
housing, and roommates from both interviews
was analyzed. All participants discussed multiple experiences related campus housing.
Criteria for the goodness and quality of
narrative inquiry studies include apparency,
verisimilitude, and transferability (Connelly &
Clandinin, 1990). Apparency invites the reader
to consider the information presented through
participant quotations and the narrative in
order to assess for themselves the reasonableness of findings and interpretations presented.
Apparency also includes being clear about the
methodological and theoretical approaches
used in conducting this study. Verisimilitude
refers to the appearance of being true and that
the information presented is plausible. Lastly,
transferability is the ability to apply information gained in this study to other situations that
might be similar. The goal is not to generalize
the experiences of all LGBTQ college students
in campus housing but rather to understand
the experiences of these particular students
that might raise questions and introduce new
areas of inquiry regarding the experiences of
LGBTQ students at other institutions.
CAMPUS HOUSING NARRATIVE
The following is a story about LGBTQ students discussing their experiences in campus
housing at Willow University:
Spring semester has rolled around at Willow
University and students are beginning to
eagerly discuss their housing arrangements for
the upcoming academic year. As a university
with a four-year residency requirement, where
you live on campus mattered a lot to students.
