Focus groups were conducted by two researchers (one residential life staff member and one
doctoral student intern) in the residence hall
where the FIT living-learning community is
located and lasted 45-60 minutes. Digital recorders were utilized to record the discussion.

email, flyers posted around the community,
and word-of-mouth announcements.
but not a part of the FIT program was also
gathered to allow for comparison between
groups. Demographic information about both
groups can be found in Table 1.
Second, qualitative data were gathered
from 11 students in the FIT program. Focus
group participants were first-year students
in their second semester at the university at
the time of data collection. Five men and six
women representing five different academic
majors participated in the focus groups. The
purpose of the focus groups was to learn from
