Discussion Questions
1. The article describes helping behaviors as a significant motivator for RAs. How can these be
woven into every area as your institution develops its residential curriculum?
2. While the article did not find any significant difference in motivation factors when stratified
for number of years in the RA position, how can RAs remain motivated throughout multiple
years in order to avoid burnout?
3. In a climate that does not foster an increase in financial compensation, how can one
communicate the non-monetary compensation associated with the position to new
applicants?
4. How might different cocurricular models (such as a curriculum model or a programmatic
model) impact RA motivation?
5. How might the restraints of this study (such as the sample size, the location of the sample,
and the sample selection process) influence the application of its finding to your own
institution?
6. What are other motivational factors for RAs based on your experience?
7. Do you believe that this study would reveal different findings if RAs were asked about
motivational factors during their interviews rather than after they already had the position?
Why or why not?
