Why Students Move Off Campus
Discussion Questions
1. How can we adapt policies so that residents feel there is more freedom on campus
and don't feel like they have to move off campus to experience it?
2. What are the motivations of your specific populations of students to move off campus?
3. What would be the benefit of removing the policy of students needing to live on campus
during their first year?
4. Does placing students in legacy/traditional halls their first year motivate them to stay on
campus longer, or does it push them to move off campus because of the amenities they
are offered?
5. Is the concern about getting caught for breaking on-campus policy motivating students
to move off campus?
6. Are there safety measures in place on your campus to make your residents feel safer living
on campus?
7. Utilizing institutional context in Sanford's Theory-to-Practice Model, what are the factors
for students who want to stay on your campus? Why do they want to leave?
8. How does student development related to issues such as rent/utilities, shopping, taxes,
and buying a house change for a resident who moves off campus? Can students obtain
knowledge about this kind of development if they continue to live on campus?
9. Is it financially viable for students to live on campus in your area? Are the costs (perceived
costs) less to live off campus? What are some of the things your institution is doing to offset
those pricing differences?
