Letter from the Editor
The Journal Board is pleased to present the 2018 spring volume of
The Journal of College and University Student Housing. Our work in
higher education is vital for student growth and success, and we believe
the work of our contributing authors offers valuable insight for the evolution of our profession. As the days slowly begin to get longer and the
temperature begins to rise, we encourage you to take some time to read
and reflect on the work in this volume. Share it with others, brainstorm
ideas, and see where the conversation leads. Spring is in the air-plant
some seeds for future growth.
In this volume, Kane Mach, Sarah Gordon, Katie Tearney, and Leon
McClinton, Jr., utilize qualitative and quantitative data to describe a
thriving living-learning program where academic and student affairs
partnerships lead to positive student outcomes. Katherine Boone
addresses the important issue of work motivation and effective recruitment strategies for resident assistants. Jessica Wode explores motivations for students choosing to stay on campus as well as for those
who choose to move off campus, offering valuable insight for marketing and operations staff. Pressley Rankin and Needham Gulley provide
a new continuum for understanding the intricacies of work/life balance
for live-in community staff. Jesse Kokaua, Tasileta Teevale, Jacques van
der Meer, Ala Teu, Stephen Scott, Mele Taumoepeau, and Ana Hoseit
explore the benefits of residential college accommodation while recognizing the difficulty of access for Pacific students. Finally, Craig Beebe,
Torry Brouillard-Bruce, Carolyn Golz, Stephen Harrison, and Shigeo
Iwamiya revisit Norb Dunkel and Pam Schreiber's 1992 article on competency development in housing professionals in order to shed light on
the emerging complexity of work in student housing.
Publishing The Journal of College and University Student Housing
would not be possible without the tremendous efforts of many volunteers. Review teams are led by extraordinary associate editors Denise
Davidson, James Penven, Sarah Gordon, and Kerri Smith. Our reviewers also provide meaningful input and feedback for authors, recognizing the value of the educational process in publishing a manuscript.
