Discussion Questions
1. How might differences in interviewers affect the scores of each student?
2. What is the biggest challenge in switching to a weighted system of hiring?
3. As noted in Table 1, the percentages of applicant to hired under the heading academic
career are polarized, some staying fairly close in percentage, and some indicating dramatic
changes. Do you believe these percentages would be different if the scoring was
standardized? Why or why not?
4. What are some of the opportunities that can come from utilizing a weighted system of
hiring? What are some of the challenges?
5. Applicant scores can be calculated using a number of different methods (i.e., raw score,
standardized score, weighted score, etc.). What are the benefits/disadvantages of each?
6. Should the RA/student leader applicant rubric reflect the specific attributes of the position
or be created on a broad basis to allow students to create and expand their position to
maximize their sense of pride?
7. There are concerns that group activities are unfair to candidates who are introverted. What
is your view on group process?
8. Does using the same applicant rubric from year to year give repeat applicants an
advantage? If so, should they be assessed using an alternative rubric judging improvements
from their previous application?
9. Some institutions stated that they align their RA position based on the institution's mission
and to showcase a diverse student staff. Is it ethical for applicant reviewers to award points
to applicants from diverse backgrounds (ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.)
and potentially disadvantage another candidate?
