Letter from the Editor

As researchers,
practitioners,
and scholars we
have assumed
the tremendous
responsibility
of educating,
training,
mentoring,
challenging, and
supporting future
generations of
leaders in our
students.

I have had the pleasure of serving as editor of The Journal of College
and University Student Housing for the last five years. Throughout the
journey I have met talented researchers and authors, worked with
some of the most outstanding volunteers in our field, and have come
to truly value and appreciate housing as my professional home. From
Von Stange passing the editor torch (with the literal handing over of
a black flash drive) to me copying the new editor, Sarah Gordon, on
far too many emails in preparation for her tenure, I have grown as
both a scholar and a practitioner. I hope you will join me in reading
and sharing the manuscripts in the 2019 fall issue - my last issue as
editor.
In this issue readers will find a dynamic blend of staff and residential student topics. Amber Dumford, Amy Ribera, and Angie Miller
study students' perceptions of their sense of belonging in relation to
their living experience. Stephen Berg and Casey Graham Brown offer
a critical study of resident assistant supervision issues, and Autumn
Wilke, Nancy Evans, Charlie Varland, Kirsten Brown, and Ellen Broido
provide an in-depth case study of disabled students' social integration in the residential setting. Jason Lynch explores the relationship
between the resident assistant work environment and self-reported
secondary trauma, while Jonathan Manz utilizes the Social Change
Model of Leadership to examine the resident assistant leadership
experience. Collectively, this group of articles provides valuable insight
into the lived experiences of both residents and staff on our campuses.
Many volunteers and several devoted staff contribute to the process
of publishing The Journal of College and University Student Housing.
Kerri Smith, Jamie Penven, Denise Davidson, and Sarah Gordon
guide and mold the process as associate editors, each overseeing
several teams of talented and dedicated reviewers. Camille Perlman,
managing editor of the Talking Stick, has supported, nudged, and encouraged me since day one, and I could not have completed my terms
as editor without her. Christine Freeman, copy editor for this and
several of the past publications, has communicated both profession-
