MANAGING MOVE-IN MADNESS G eorge Brelsford distinctly remembers the day in 1976 when, amidst the red and orange colors of the fall season, he arrived for the ﬁrst time at his residence hall at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia. The sparsely furnished, blue cinderblock room would be his new home-away-from-home. Relatively ignored by the limited number of staff leading the process, he moved his belongings – just some clothing, a radio, and some drinking mugs – into his room. It’s a far cry from what Brelsford experiences these days as the associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. When he prepares his staff for another action-packed, movein weekend, he does so armed with 27 years’ worth of move-in day experiences and his observations of how the move-in process has progressed over the years. “When I moved into the residence halls it was just me and my stuff in my car,” Brelsford says. “Now, it’s moving vans. It just seems like everyone has a lot more equipment. It’s smaller – an iPod rather than a stereo – but there is more of it and it’s more expensive. They have 42-inch plasma televisions now.” The change in technology, processes, attitudes, and approaches is not unexpected. For that reason, throughout the years campuses have massaged and tweaked their move-in processes. In some cases, that means extending them to include multiple move-in days. In others it means adding more staff to ﬁeld increased student housing requests, upgrading technology to communicate better with new students, and recruiting more volunteers to unload the caravans of trailers, ﬁlled to the brim, that arrive on campus. And they continue to make these changes, all with the goal of getting each year’s class of students started off on the right foot. ONE CHANCE FOR A FIRST IMPRESSION I f it seems like a lot of work just to get students into their rooms, consider the importance of also providing a safe, fun, and welcoming atmosphere for both incoming and returning students. A positive environment can take a student’s move-in experience from good to great. 34 Talking Stick
