44 for the Future by the Talking Stick writers community It is said that the shark must constantly keep moving forward in order to survive. The same can be said for most people, even when their forward movement is more ﬁgurative than physical. The desire to improve and evolve exists in everyone and – as most everyone reading this would attest – particularly within student affairs professionals. After all, their entire careers are focused on helping create an environment where students can thrive and grow. And at least a little of that mission can be directed at themselves. Volunteer writers for the Talking Stick reached out to their co-workers and cohorts to discover what resolutions they have made to improve themselves. The guidelines were purposely kept loose, and the result was a free-wheeling range of tips and tricks to help them better themselves, their staffs, their departments, and their campuses. When reviewing all the different suggestions, we saw that they generally fell into ﬁve different topic areas: people, practices, education, balance, and facilities. We’ve created a simple legend to help you identify which is which. Still, we encourage you to read all 44 of them, choose the ones that will best work for you, and then keep on moving forward.
