For instance, students are increasingly concerned about our collective environmental footprint, and they have lobbied for creative strategies to conserve energy. Vivien Insull, director of residential services at the University of Essex in Colchester, England, explains how the university has responded to students’ concern for sustainability: “The university has recently set up a green task force to look at a variety of initiatives. Some projects that are currently being investigated are recycling waste, containing energy costs, and looking at more sustainable initiatives, including fitting solar panels to existing residences, sourcing goods and food through fair-trade suppliers, and setting up allotments in the grounds so students can grow their own veggies.
