Two students walking through the Woodland Hall lobby stop to admire the reproduction of the lunette from the Albert Sullivan residence built in 1892 in Chicago, Illinois, by renowned architect Louis Sullivan. Sullivan has been called the father of modernism and was a mentor to architect Frank Lloyd Wright. portfolio, student sculptures, and small bronze sculptures. Some of the pieces were displayed in the inner circle of the Towers’ main desk area, located just outside the doorway to the Residential Restaurant, near the entrance to each of seven halls and close to many of the students’ mailboxes. The program succeeded in one of its primary goals: bringing art into the lives of residents. Students reacted to and interacted with the artwork, and they could often be heard discussing those they liked and debating the merits of those that challenged their personal aesthetic. move forward to fabrication and installation. In addition to including sketches, maquette (a smallscale model), project outline, and budget, proposals had to be responsive to at least one of the following themes: inclusion, growth, harmony, helping, service, friendship, hope, citizenship, diversity, and character. After students designed and built small mockups of their projects, a committee composed of representatives from residence life and the art department met to select the designs that would actually be built and then installed inside and at the entrances of residence halls. Then the real work began for Flesher and his students. Working within a budget of $2,500, Flesher managed to purchase the materials, many of which were recycled, needed for the projects. Five proposals were selected and then three pieces were completed and installed by the students before the end of fall semester. The installations included a set of aluminum masks, copper hands in the shape of a 6-foot bird, and a steel providing real world art experiences As part of the residence life/art department partnership, students in sculpture instructor Ryan Flesher’s 4D sculpture course were given the chance to take part in a formal proposal process, submitting specific ideas or designs that, if selected, would DeNiSe mAcDoNALD, Siue phoTo SerViceS November + December 2008 3
