The evolving Role of The ResidenT AdvisoR RAs as Student Development Theorists Since the 1950s, theories about student development have acted as an impetus for change in the field of higher education. Pioneers like Chickering, Perry, Pascarella, Terenzini, and Astin have provided an in-depth look at what college students need and how they develop as students. Professional staff use student development theory as a foundation to inform RA programming, supervision, recruitment and training, crisis response, and other facets of the RA position; as a result, expectations that RAs will facilitate that development appropriately are much higher than they used to be. In the 1990s, generational theory began to complement student development theory.
