Assessing AssignmenTs by Mannix Clark he assignments process. Everyone does it, but it’s rare to find two campus housing offices that do it the exact same way. Determining the practices and policies of the process a campus will follow requires a careful mix of logistics, resource allocation, the campus mission, technology, and some good, old-fashioned hunches. Then these are put into play to complete a process that involves a complicated orchestration of many different factors: matching students’ habits or study patterns, sorting through opinions expressed about noise or cleanliness in order to minimize conflicts, and searching for overlaps in academic and extracurricular interests. For the past two years, ACUHO-I has surveyed hundreds of housing assignment professionals for their opinions about best practices in housing assignments. By 2008, more than 180 participants responded from all types of institutions. Results reveal interesting variations in housing requirements, schedules, and assignment deadlines. For example, 52.4 percent of respondents have a freshman live-on requirement, while 33.7 percent have a sophomore live-on requirement. At 40 percent of the institutions, freshmen live only with other freshmen. The average time between when the residence halls open for the new academic year and the first day of class is 4.61 days. Freshmen at a number of institutions (19 percent) begin applying for housing in October (see Table A); and more schools (37 percent) either send assignments to freshmen or make them available online in July (see Table B). The survey also reconfirmed what is shaping the assignments world the most: technology. Some institutions have outsourced their software and data management needs, but the majority work with homegrown systems maintained by their own information technology staff. Of course, there are still several institutions that do assignments by hand and believe that the human touch gives them an advantage.
