a global View families of international students may appreciate programs and services like daycare, language classes, parenting classes, gardening or cooking classes, outreach groups for single parents, recreational activities, and programs on securing employment. Personalized efforts can go a long way in making students feel at home. Some institutions, for example, send a campus representative to visit students in their home countries before the school year begins. Others correspond electronically with new international students and make arrangements to pick them up from the airport, 24 hours a day. brIng the world to our caMPuses As part of a conversation about globalizing campuses, summit participants discussed the opportunities students need to become more aware of global perspectives. Some institutions have developed specific global learning communities where participants have access to an online student partner from an institution in another country and may take an online course from an institution in another country. Participants may also travel over spring break to another country to see firsthand how a global business operates. In addition, these learning communities may have faculty-inresidence who involve the students in research opportunities, sustainability efforts, and summer trips abroad. Other institutions have developed international learning communities where local students live with international students in a blended population. Some of the weekly programs include students preparing meals from a select country, students from a specific country presenting information about their own customs and traditions, and professionals offering advice about securing a visa, answering passport questions, or getting a job in the host country. Knowing how difficult it is for international students to bring very much from home, some institutions have established re-use systems where things like appliances, bedding, and pots and pans are collected at the end of the year, cleaned and stored, and then distributed to the following year’s international learning community students. send students out Into the world Offering educational and residential programs is a valuable way to bring the world to the campus.
