JUST IN BY THE NUMBERS This time of year, most housing offices are dealing with the vast amounts of stuff that students bring with them to campus. But it won’t be long before it’s time for them to move out again, and odds are that most of that stuff won’t be going with them. That’s why several campuses have launched end-of-the-year initiatives that urge students to donate their unwanted items and save them from the landfill. As just one example, last June New York University donated a 73-ton mountain of reusable items to Goodwill — a jump from a mere 8 tons the year before. The sustainability effort delivered items ranging from clothes and furniture to blankets and even minifridges and saved the university approximately $10,000 in wastehauling costs. That’s a savings that is always in style. 73 AMOUNT, IN TONS, OF MATERIAL COLLECTED FOR GOODWILL INDUSTRIES BY NEW YORK UNIVERSITY’S SECOND ANNUAL “GREEN APPLE MOVE OUT” 12 TALKING STICK
