GROWING SEASON LEAN ON ME ACUHO-I offers many opportunities for professionals at all levels to network and to possibly spark a mentoring relationship. The James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute and the Chief Housing Ofﬁcers Institute are intentionally programmed to offer middle- to senior-level professionals time with an established mentor within the institute. STARS College is designed for undergraduate students who are considering a career in housing. They are also placed with a mentor during the program so that they can ask questions and receive information freely. “Including a mentoring relationship as a part of NHTI seemed natural given the institute’s emphasis on learning, selfevaluation, and career development,” says Pam Schreiber, director of housing at the University of Washington in Seattle and co-creator of the National Housing Training Institute. “We were hoping (and I think this has played out) that the mentor would assist participants in gaining perspective on both their work in housing and residence life and on career and life decisions. We also wanted to support and enhance learning at the institute by creating opportunities for dialogue and idea exchange guided by an expert in a safe environment.” And two recent NHTI grads can attest to the beneﬁt of that mentor involvement. “The faculty were amazing in terms of their openness in sharing from their past experiences along with providing feedback regarding our own experiences,” says Drew Jahr, an assistant director of residence life at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Torry Brouillard-Bruce, assistant director of residential education for the University of Arizona in Tucson, adds, “It [the mentorship] has been a great relationship that I’ve truly grown to value.
