Residence Hall Receives an Extreme Makeover
The television show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” generally shows houses getting the renovation treatment. Recently, however, the show took its work to Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, inspired by 23-year-old student Brian Keefer. Keefer suffered a gymnastics injury in 2008 that paralyzed him from the neck down. To help care for his son, Keefer’s father retired early from his military career and moved to the university’s campus. In order to accommodate Keefer and his father, a student lounge area in his residence hall was provided as a living space. In response to Keefer’s story, the Extreme Makeover team set out in June of 2011 to restructure his family’s home as well as a community-shared space in his residence hall. The student lounge space in Woolridge Hall was redesigned to create a fun and interactive space for Keefer as well as the hall’s nearly 200 other residents. With the help of the design team and hundreds of volunteers, the space was renovated to include brightly colored walls and ceilings, new flooring, a television lounge area, and a new shuffleboard table in addition to two refurbished pool tables. In Keefer’s eyes, this was his way of giving back to everyone in the hall who had given up a study lounge for him and his father to live in. Everyone enjoyed viewing the show on October 21, 2011. “His empathy for residents in need and quick response to a resident’s imploration was always prompt and heartfelt,” said Kyle Rose, a graduate resident director. “As much as he impacted the residence life department during his tenure, the upshot of his accident coupled with his attitude greatly reshaped many lives in the department.” — Bridget Cunningham

ON THE MAILING LIST
Folks, We are interested in pursuing some “work for board” plans at UW-Superior within the halls. The work would be things like student custodial, student maintenance, and snow clearing crew. Do any of you currently, or in the past, have these types of plans? Do you know of other schools who do? Please send me details. Thanks! Mickey Fitch Assistant Director of Residence Life University of Wisconsin-Superior

Response
Mickey, Sounds good, but be careful of FLSA and tax implications (they ground similar intentions to a halt at another institution with which I was affiliated). David M. McMahan Dean of Students Tusculum College
