topics via the website reddit.com. So how do housing professionals reach out to the geeks? More importantly, how do they help students connect with their fellow geeks and other students on campus? Emily Sandoval suggests starting by learning the language: “If you speak their language and reference a game, comic book, movie, or other interest, their faces light up and you can find yourself having an extended conversation about geek stuff.” By connecting with students’ interests, we can open the doors to other similarly interested students and academic and cocurricular pursuits. Engaging geek students in this way also develops their self-confidence because they often have a great deal of knowledge in their area of interest/
passion. For the past two years at California State University, San Marcos, the residence halls have hosted Geek Week, a period of programming dedicated to celebrating all things geeky. Each night, programs including Magic the Gathering (the most popular collectible card game), “Glee” (television show) viewing, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (an Internet series created by geek-god Joss Whedon), and Buffy’s Stake in Feminism are presented by students, staff, and faculty. Offering these programs at the beginning of the year announces to the students that their interests are not only recognized, but celebrated and welcomed. Post Geek Week, students continue to build upon these opportunities to create their own
communities. Students play Magic the Gathering, Pokémon, and Nintendo DS together, even running their own tournaments. At the University of California, Santa Cruz, the coordinator for residential education, Sarah Sutorius, oversees the gaming-themed house at Crown College. Some of the students who have chosen to live in this community describe it as a safe haven, having previously been ostracized or ridiculed for their interests.
