Pods Offer Flexible Living Spaces
The architecture company Perkins + Will has created a living model for residence halls that defies the traditional design of loaded corridors. The uPod, a repositionable modular system of parts forming a pod, creates a space-efficient and multifunctional living space. Each single-person pod can be expanded and arranged in four unique ways that enhance private study, personal storage, social interaction, or sleep. Mount Pleasant, Michigan Projected Opening: June 2013 • Cost: $28.5 million Designed with medical students in mind, the Graduate Housing Project is expected to open simultaneously with the new College of Medicine in June of 2013. The building will feature 94 apartments with one, two, or four bedrooms, complete with a furnished living room, full kitchen, bathroom(s), and utility room. The project is planned to have LEED Platinum certification and will house 164 students. The two buildings will provide much needed student housing after construction for academic buildings demolished 128 apartments. The Neumann/Smith Company designed the project, using environmentally friendly and sustainable products to construct the first student apartments built on campus since 1970.

Saint Joseph, Minnesota Projected Opening: July 2012 • Cost: $8 million Centennial Commons, named in honor of the College of Saint Benedict’s approaching centennial in 2013, will consist of four buildings containing eight four-bedroom townhomes. The architects, DLR Group, designed the residential complex as well as a multipurpose community center. As the first townhouse-style student housing on campus, the residences were designed to provide a connected, responsible, and private living experience to prepare the student community for independent living after graduation. Monthly utility usage for the townhomes will be individually calculated and shared with the residents, even though they will not be directly billed. Each two-story home has two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a full kitchen, living room, and washer and dryer. The complex will house 124 students and one live-in residence director. Both the student residences and community center were planned to meet LEED Silver certification.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama Projected Opening: August 2012 • Cost: $41 million Education Realty Trust, Inc. and the Edwards Companies are developing a student apartment complex adjacent to the University of Alabama’s law and nursing schools. The project will house 774 students in residences with one, two, three, or four bedrooms. Each of the 337 units will have fully furnished bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, and a utility room. The four-story complex will also contain a clubhouse, swimming pool, and outdoor patio area. Other amenities will include a movie theater, fitness center, study area, game room, and faculty offices.
