First-Generation Housing Program at the University of Cincinnati Expands
Last February, the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio received a Social Innovation Fund grant for $550,000. The funds will be disbursed over two years to expand the Gen-1 housing program and the Higher Education Mentoring Initiative to support students coming from the foster care system. The Gen-1 program focuses on students who are eligible for Pell grants and have parents that did not obtain four-year degrees. Judith Mause, program coordinator of the Gen-1 Theme House, says these students tend to fit the profile of a “perfect storm” and need specialized structure to initiate and maintain their academic achievement: “They commute, they work more than 20 hours, they do not embed themselves in the university, and they do not make good use of university resources. Consequently, their success rate is abysmal.” After receiving the funds, the Gen-1 house can now accommodate more residents, and they will also provide a meal plan and award partial housing stipends. Sophomores now have the option to stay on in the Gen-1 house and are required to attend various events and academic conferences throughout the quarter. The grant has also allowed 20 to 30 juniors and seniors to continue as alumni ambassadors of the Gen-1 program. The alumni – students who have successfully completed their freshman year with the program after living in the Gen-1 house – work with the younger students to share their insights and support for the program. “Long term big picture, our vision is that we hope that the Gen-1 program and the success that we’ve enjoyed will be a catalyst for systemic change for the university,” says Bob Seuss, co-director of the Gen-1 program. “Right now we are just touching the tip of the iceberg.” The main goals for 2012 are to increase the number of students in the program, spread awareness of the Gen-1 program among UC’s faculty, and gather resources for firstgeneration students. Seuss aims to prepare staff members to support this unique group of students, who occasionally need augmented academic structure and advising. The First-Generation Scholars, a new student-run organization on campus, kicks off in January to achieve many of the same goals on a student level. Many of the Gen-1 alumni have leadership positions with this group and hope to reach out to other first-generation students on campus who could benefit from the support of this program. — Kristen Lott
