Building Leaders
By Joshua I. Hiscock

Purposeful student staff training makes the RAs of today the true campus leaders of tomorrow.

What does it take for a student to be a resident assistant? To judge by much of the training that potential RAs receive, the answer sometimes seems to be very operational and focused on day-to-day processes. While it is certainly important that student staff understand how to serve customers at an information desk, program an event to build community, assist students in distress, respond to roommate conflicts, and address latenight policy violations, there is still a great deal of untapped potential for the training experience to offer them more. What would it take for this experience to move beyond providing information about routine tasks and toward a transformative experience that trains RAs to be leaders? The training of residence hall staff presents a unique opportunity for

student employees to develop leadership skills that can benefit the individual, the organization, and the campus community. In The Handbook for Student Leadership Development, the authors – Susan Komives, John Dugan, Julie Owen, Craig Slack, and Wendy Wagner – address the evolving nature of leadership theory. They describe how each campus may define leadership differently, just as each student and staff member may have a unique perspective on what they believe leadership is. To complicate this further, every individual identifies differently as a leader. In their article “Developing a Leadership Identity: A Grounded Theory” in the Journal of College Student Development (Vol. 46, No. 6), Komives, Susan Longerbeam, Julie Owen, Felicia Mainella, and Laura Osteen address the stages that college students experience in the development

of a leadership identity. For some students, this is a process during which leadership is first seen as something that other people do and eventually seen as something that everyone can do. This means that each student selected to serve as a residence hall staff member is a potential leader, though they may not recognize this themselves. Despite differing definitions of leadership, it is possible to develop a common definition within a residence hall staff training program, one that establishes higher standards and expectations, builds a shared vision to advance the organizational mission, and empowers staff to excel and thrive in their work. When planning an RA training program, it is imperative to be intentional about engaging student
