Looking Back. Looking Forward.

The end of the calendar year is usually when people glance in the rear-view mirror. But for those of us in campus housing, the school year is more likely to spur time for reflection. It will be particularly true for me as I wrap up my tenure as the ACUHO-I president. Fortunately, these past months have been filled with accomplishments and smile-inducing memories. I also realize that these moments I will forever treasure are just dots on the timeline of ACUHO-I history. To add more perspective, ACUHO-I is just a dot on the even longer timeline of higher education (see the story on page 32 if you don’t believe me). But the scope of our past recogNIze and future shouldn’t belittle the work we’re doing in the here and now. For example, this March I was privileged to be one of eight professionals from the United States who traveled to South Africa to serve as faculty members during the second Student Housing Training Institute. It was an amazing opportunity that never would have been possible without the work of past ACUHO-I leaders. They are the ones who established the invaluable relationship with our South African colleagues and helped form ACUHO-I’s Southern Africa Chapter. At the same time, this year’s board began to look in earnest at the mega-issues of ACUHO-I membership as well as our inclusion and equity practices. We have just scratched the surface of these topics, and there is much more good work to be done. But I am confident and proud that the conversations happening today will have a profound impact on our association well into the future.

If you are attending the ACUHO-I Annual Conference & Exposition in Anaheim, California, this July, I encourage you to be a part of our town hall meeting during the first session to learn more about these pieces of our strategic plan. So, as we reflect I encourage you to take a look around your campus, your association, and your profession. Recognize that we all enjoy the view we have because, as Isaac Newton once said, we stand upon the shoulders of giants. In addition, take the time to lift others up and help ensure that the view is clear for future generations as well.
