The ownership and safety that students feel within residences that are designed intentionally around principles of community building is clear at Virginia Tech’s Ambler Johnston Hall, which currently houses a residential college serving 322 honors students. long for students in this renovated hall to establish their homestead, so much so that plans for an 850-person residential college to open this fall in the larger building complex had residents talking about the possible impacts of the additional student population on their tight-knit community. To create the intimate feel that the honors program enjoys, the residential college will be split into four “houses,” allowing students to build relationships and know their neighbors.
