Are You In?
I was a new resident director at the University of Illinois in 1982, fresh out of graduate school, when Dr. Gary North, the housing department director and president of ACUHO-I, shared his story with the staff. He had been raised in a very humble environment in the rolling hills of Kentucky and had to work for years prior to attending college because his family did not have the financial means to send him to school. He would enter the university as a nontraditional student and be the first from his family to attend college. He struggled at times knowing that other students had so much more than his family did. And there were many times that first year when he considered We tranSfOrm dropping out, but each time a resident advisor would encourage him to continue lIVeS thrOugh pursuing a degree. In the end, he went on to graduate and eventually earn a Ph.D.
Our InteractIOnS WIth Our StudentS. We tranSfOrm lIVeS thrOugh SOcIal medIa and technOlOgy.
When he finished his story, the room was quiet. Then he passionately asked our group, “Will you answer the door at 2 a.m. when that student needs you? Will you walk in the door when that student seems lonely and afraid? Are you in?” This year, there will be 1.8 million students living in our residence halls across the globe. They will bring with them the hopes and dreams of their families and communities while facing societal challenges such as climate change and a volatile global economy. They are also future leaders who will transform society as doctors, teachers, scientists, business leaders, politicians, faculty members, mothers, fathers, and community members.
That means we must be successful in our job to transform lives. It’s what we do best, by creating inclusive communities, providing active learning opportunities, and creating buildings that serve as learning labs. We transform lives through our interactions with our students. We transform lives through social media and technology. We transform lives through our staffs. Our colleagues in South Africa are showing how an entire country can be transformed through the efforts of a campus residential experience. So, as a new academic year begins, I ask if you want to make a difference in the lives of your students. I’m assuming your answer is yes. But the bigger question is the same one Dr. North asked 30 years ago: Are you in? Vennie Gore ACUHO-I President
