from room dimensions and window manufacturer specifications to all the electrical, mechanical, and structural data. Changes made in each area of design directly impact all others in the model, streamlining coordination. An ambitious schedule for a housing project at the University of Missouri in Columbia caused designers to jump right into using Revit as a design tool. Some instant advantages presented themselves. First, it was faster. Programs like SketchUp need to be rendered in other programs, which can take days of duplicate work and long hours, tying up the systems processing the renderings. Revit uses Cloud technology, and renderings can be completed in minutes. Using Revit directly means that nothing will be lost in translation when moving from SketchUp ideas into Revit. The downside is that technologies like Revit increase pressure on the design

team to make more decisions earlier in the process. If things go smoothly, the advantage is that all the project information is contained in the Revit model, which means that small design changes can be made until the last minute when construction drawings are extracted. However, a major change in scope is difficult to accommodate, because of the complexity of the Revit model: hence the importance of the early visioning. For designers, these are all tools to study and facilitate the ultimate design. For clients, they are tools to increase their understanding of the result. Simply put, “The client is better informed,” says Bragg. Diana Adzemovic, a design project manager in the University of Michigan’s Department of Architecture, Engineering and Construction, agrees: “Three-dimensional technologies

are immensely helpful. Many people don’t understand what lines mean (flat drawings). 3-D models help achieve a completely new level of understanding.” Renderings, whether hand drawn or produced digitally, can also enjoy another life as a means of encouraging donor gifts.

From Individual Players to Team
As the design process moves forward, the institution usually establishes a smaller oversight committee, which continues to represent the interests of all campus stakeholders and to interface closely with the design team. Strategies and organization need to be clear. Who should be at the table? What process will enable the project to advance in a timely and efficient way? This is important because dedicated and
