Hi all, I have a couple of quick questions about fall breaks and/or Thanksgiving holidays. How long are your fall breaks? Does your fall break typically occur during Thanksgiving holidays or separately? Do you close residence halls/apartments for fall break/Thanksgiving holidays? We’re looking at a university fall break next year that falls during Thanksgiving, and we were curious about what other schools are doing. Right now, the Thanksgiving break here is only three days and we do not close. Thanks in advance! Brooke, We started staying open over all breaks about five years ago, and it was a great decision. We do not close for fall break, Thanksgiving break, winter break, or spring break. We have a true 10-month contract. Contact me directly for details. Joe Mills Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs/Director of Housing Austin Peay State University Hi Brooke, at Old Dominion University, fall breaks are four days (Saturday through Tuesday). Our fall break occurs separately from the Thanksgiving holiday. We do not close residence halls for fall break, but we do close them for Thanksgiving break (4.5 days – Wednesday at noon through Sunday). A majority of our students are regional and can be home within a short drive (most in less than two hours). Students who need break housing (Thanksgiving, winter, or spring) are encouraged to live in an apartment community that better meets their needs. We used to keep three residence halls open over break periods and counted the number of students who stayed; we found that in general fewer than 50 students total (out of a potential 1,100 students) would stick around over breaks, and most were either required to for athletics or did so because they could. By driving students to our apartment communities that stay open over the breaks and making arrangements with athletics to house their students at a hotel or to have the teams travel over breaks, we have eliminated the need for students to stay over breaks. In the three years that we have done this, we have not had to make arrangements for a single student other than our student athletes. Daniel Terrell Associate Director for Housing & Residence Life: Housing Services Old Dominion University Our fall break occurs in mid-October and includes a weekend and two week days (Monday and Tuesday). We do close our residence halls for Thanksgiving, which is a four-day break. Gerry Geil Director of Residence Life Allegany College of Maryland At Alverno College, we do have a fall break that we call an “R Weekend.” This year that was October 11 and 12. Classes are cancelled (R stands for Rest, Relax, and Rejuvenate), but the halls remain open. Then we have a Thanksgiving break, which is the Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving week. The college and the residence halls close at that time. Our fall break is always separate from the Thanksgiving break. For Thanksgiving break, winter break, and spring break, although the halls close, students may be able to stay if they request but will be charged additional to stay during that time, and meal service is not available.
