Food
CBORD, a provider of campus card and integrated security software and
hardware systems to colleges and universities, recently announced the
release of an online ordering system called GET Food™. This application
is part of CBORD’s existing cloud-based commerce system that allows
students to order many items. With GET Food, students can view menus
of participating merchants and place orders via the application. For more

Efficient, Tougher
Speed Queen, a washing machine manufacturer, has recently put a
new type of top-loading washer on the market that it claims will be
more efficient than existing machines. The new machine, which is
designed to have a longer life and to improve washing results, has
modifications that reduce water usage and meet the new Department
of Energy regulations. They also come equipped with a new mixing

american Campus Communities
named in Forbes’ top 100
In April 2013, American Campus Communities was named one of America’s
Top 100 Most Trustworthy Companies by Forbes magazine. They received
this ranking for maintaining high GMI Ratings, which assess companies
according to a wide variety of risk metrics, such as executive compensation,
turnover in management, and transparency in accounting practices. James
A. Kaplan, vice chair and chief executive of GMI, explains that they review
more than 60 different variables in order to rank companies in terms of
their trustworthiness: “Those companies that persistently display the most
accounting transparency; have the lowest incidence of high-risk events;
and have appropriate Board supervision are typically ranked the highest.

Young Harris, Georgia
Projected Opening: Fall 2013 • Cost: $12.3 million
As part of a new residence hall opening for the
fall 2013 semester, 200 first-year students will be
living in small communities called pods. Each pod
configuration features 11 to 12 double rooms, a single
room for the resident assistant, two bathrooms,
and a living area. The complex, composed of
three adjoining pavilions, was designed by Lord,
Aeck, & Sargent Architecture and built by Hardin
Construction Company to meet LEED standards. Two
four-story buildings and a three-story building make
up the complex’s 62,000 square feet.
University of texas at dallas
Dallas, Texas
Projected Opening: August 2014 • Cost: $53.25 million
The University of Texas at Dallas’ Richardson
campus is building a new student living and
learning center, complete with a dining facility and
25,000-square-foot gymnasium. They are seeking
LEED Silver certification, and the 235,000-squarefoot complex is scheduled to open in August 2014.
Designed by HKS Architects Inc., the complex will
house 600 students and will include a fitness
area, multipurpose classroom, snack bar, laundry
facilities, and lounge areas.
oakland University
Rochester, Michigan
Projected Opening: August 2014 • Cost: $30 million
Construction has begun on a new student housing
complex that will accommodate 500 students.
The complex is targeted at first-year students and
sophomores and will conform to LEED energy
standards. The new construction will help OU
continue its transition from a commuter-based
campus to one offering a full-time residential
experience. The new complex will also house the
honors college and a small café along with group
meeting and study spaces.
