THROUGHOUT THE RENEWAL PERIOD, STUDENTS ALSO RECEIVED MULTIPLE ELECTRONIC MESSAGES FROM STUDENT LIFE AND UNIVERSITY HOUSING REMINDING THEM ABOUT THIS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY. Ohio State's new Residence on Tenth will provide exciting space for sophomores. recruitment strategy at the start of the spring semester to get the word out to all first-year students. Faculty and representatives from the programmatic committee came together to co-present information sessions in the residence halls. One hundred spots in the program were held specifically for transfer students, including those from Ohio State's smaller campuses. Throughout the renewal period, students also received multiple electronic messages from student life and university housing reminding them about this unique opportunity. When creating the cohort groups, geography was taken into account so students could have their meetings in their own residence hall or a nearby one. Students were intentionally not assigned to majorspecific groups, and their academic interests were not a factor when assigning faculty members to the cohorts. 32 TALKING STICK Students interested in being a member of the inaugural STEP cohort indicated their interest on their electronic housing renewal application, which took place in early February. Demand for the program well exceeded the 1,000 target, so students were then randomly selected and informed in March of their acceptance to the program. Those not selected were kept on a waitlist and offered spots that opened up throughout the spring and summer. FACULTY RECRUITMENT The STEP Faculty Committee spearheaded the recruitment process for faculty. They hosted a series of informal lunches in the residence hall dining operations to promote the opportunity and engage their colleagues across the university. Nominations
