This photo features the exterior of the new residence halls on the Qatar Foundation's campus along with the giant wind turbines in front of the buildings. These halls were built using the 21st century project principles. participants were able to look through a lens that is focused on creation and innovation. An extremely valuable component of the trip was the cultural experience and education. The culture in both Qatar and the United Arab Emirates is steeped in history and religion. From an operational perspective, this has informed how they build their campuses, including providing facilities that provide for the separation of males and females, as well as prayer rooms and other modifications to allow students to observe religious practices. Recognizing the importance of cultural understanding is a valuable takeaway as the student housing industry works with an international population. One of the many highlights of the trip was the opportunity to tour Qatar Foundation's student housing, which was built with a focus on ACUHO-I's 21st Century Project - a multi-phased initiative that re-imagines the future of college and university housing and integrates the concepts of sustainability, technology, community, flexibility, and innovation.
