The College of William & Mary opened its
new Greek Village in August 2013. The new
community provides houses for 11 of the
already existing fraternities on campus, as
well as a common building for community
use.
Fraternities at William & Mary have
previously been housed in 12 attached units
with 36 beds each since 1968, often leaving
the houses with open beds and therefore
excess charges to chapters. In the new
development, each of the 11 stand-alone,
two-story houses provides 17 beds, along with
a living room, kitchen, chapter room, back
patio, and air conditioning.
The 12th building provides living and work
space for the assistant director for fraternity
and sorority housing, as well as spaces for
facility maintenance, chapter functions,
governing councils, and storage for chapters
without facilities.
Because one-third of William & Mary
students are involved in Greek life, this new
community not only provides additional
housing to those who want to live on campus
but also shows the university's support of
Greek life. "The houses were located along
one of the main roads through campus so
their visibility would be increased, showing
our pride in them," says Deb Boykin, assistant
vice president of student affairs and director of
residence life.
