Visitors to the central office will be able to leave
their mark by placing their campus pin on the wall
behind the reception desk and by marking their
campus location on the world map in the lobby.
Preserving
history
Considering the important role
that buildings play in the work
of ACUHO-I members, it's to be
expected that the historic nature of the
building was part of its appeal.
The founder of the company
and the building's namesake was
Edward Orton, Jr., the son of the
first president of The Ohio State
University. The senior Orton was also
a noted geologist, and the younger
Orton followed a similar path as clays
and ceramics fascinated him. Looking
to expand knowledge of the ceramic
process beyond the proprietary
limitations of trade secrecy, he worked
to establish a "Course in Clayworking
and Ceramics" at OSU, the first of its
kind outside Europe. He later helped
spread knowledge about his chosen

field by assisting in the formation
of the American Ceramic Society.
Upon his death in 1932, the society
dubbed him the "Dean of Ceramics in
America."
OSU and also the campus architect
from 1929 through 1956; he was
most famous for his design of the
university's Thompson Library as well
as the venerable Ohio Stadium.
The building itself holds historic
significance as well and is listed on
the Columbus Register of Historic
Properties and the National Register
of Historic Places. Its description
reads, "the building as a whole
demonstrates the variety of ways in
which the ceramic products can be
integrated into a structure." To that
end, terra cotta features surround
the building, including a two-story
Corinthian portico, sculpted wreaths
that complement the windows, and
two large medallions, prominently
placed on the façade, depicting the
profiles of Antony and Cleopatra. All
of this was designed by the architect
Howard Dwight Smith, a professor at

appreciate the appeal of a historic
building, they also recognize the
challenges that go along with
renovating one. One of those
challenges is the expense required to
make those updates. Fortunately, in
this case the building's age actually
helped make it affordable.
Orton's company moved out of
the building in 1981, and, though it
hosted a variety of organizations, it
also stood vacant for long periods. As
a result, ACUHO-I paid only $375,000
for almost 17,500 square feet (9,440
square feet for working office space)
that had been valued by the county,
pre-renovation, at $1.2 million. As
