be effective advocates, innovative
partners, and campus educators with
significant experience regarding what
may or may not engage and retain
emerging leaders within the context
of the institution. Our departments
are already heavily invested in the
development of staff and have
systems in place to support talent
management efforts. Functioning as
auxiliaries to their institutions, large
departments operate in similar ways

to corporations, making them viable
sites to pilot succession planning
programs modeled on business and
industry. The organizational learning
that results from implementing
new talent management programs
helps housing departments support
leaders within their organizations
while supplying helpful data to guide
decisions regarding succession
planning on the institutional level.

of students. As a result, housing
professionals collaborate with
faculty and administrators across
student affairs, business affairs,
and academic affairs. Long-standing
collaborative relationships provide
housing professionals with a unique
perspective on the institution that can
feed human resources and executivelevel administrators important
information about leadership
opportunities and career pathways
that would engage and retain a diverse
pool of emerging leaders.
These ideas are not new. Housing
organizations have been, and will
continue to be, a significant site for
recruiting and preparing generations
of future institutional leaders. What
may be new is the awareness that
departmental efforts to develop staff
can inform and be informed by the
institution's succession planning
goals. Because housing departments
serve as a career entry point, we are
well positioned to identify emerging
issues related to engaging and
retaining new professionals and
potential leaders who represent
groups that are absent from or
underrepresented in institutional
leadership roles. By relying on the
strengths of our profession, housing
departments add value to succession
planning efforts and contribute to the
likelihood that our institutions will
have access to competent, prepared
leadership well into the future. tS
