Campus safety, and specifically how it
relates to sexual assault, is not a new issue
for campuses, but the spotlight on it is now
brighter than ever. In January, President Barack
Obama formed the Task Force to Protect
Students From Sexual Assault, which released a
report in April: Not Alone: The First Report of the
White House Task Force to Protect Students From
Sexual Assault. The website NotAlone.gov has
also been created as a resource.
Number of on-campus sexual
assaults at U.S. four-year
colleges in 2012
Earlier this year NPR reporters studied statistics from the U.S.
Department of Education and revealed that between 2008 and 2012 the
number of forcible rapes reported at four-year colleges in the United
States had increased 49 percent. This is a staggering figure, though
NPR also suggested that this was evidence that students were now more
willing to "come forward and report this underreported crime." As Daniel
Carter, director of a group called 32 National Campus Safety Initiative,
noted, "It's a good thing that more victims are reporting because they're
getting the help and support they need from their institutions."
More action is likely forthcoming. In July,
Senator Claire McCaskill from Missouri led
a high-profile introduction of the Campus
Safety and Accountability Act. In addition, in
October campuses must begin to comply with
the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act of
2013, an amendment to Clery Act regulations.
As students move back to campus and plans
are made for programming, the issue is likely
at the forefront for many campus housing
professionals and even more so in September,
which is National Campus Safety Awareness
Month. Watch for ACUHO-I to share more
information and resources as they become
available.
