Apartment Life: Living and Learning
As apartment-style living on campus has evolved over the years, so too must
departments that offer this housing option. These housing professionals have
found that their work involves not simply serving nontraditional students and
their families but also mentoring student managers, partnering with facilities
management, navigating public-private partnerships, and building communities for
traditional students living in apartment-style residence halls. Wanting to hear about
the latest developments in this area, the Talking Stick asked five professionals to
share their vision about the challenges and opportunities facing them.

Thomas Germain: I think it is a very exciting
time. From serving nontraditional students to
the increase in public-private partnerships across
the country, our work as a committee has never
been so relevant. More specifically, I believe
that professional guidance is needed for young
professionals managing apartment-style housing
that hosts undergraduate students.
Jeanette Weider: I agree. We need to connect
with more staff working in apartment-style
housing. We know a lot about the student
experience in traditional residence halls, and
we have a wealth of experience working with
graduate students and students with families

gap is how to work with single, undergraduate
students in apartments. Around the country,
individuals are doing great work building
community, addressing student conduct, and
providing quality educational experiences
in apartments. We need a place for these
professionals to share their best practices and
knowledge.
Deborah Newman: We are definitely seeing a
demand at the regional level for some stronger
guidance in single-student, apartment-style
housing. I did a roundtable on developing
community in an apartment-style residence
