that the RA is not the only one to
learn from the student staff member
experience. The efforts of an RA are
clearly related to the perceptions and
experiences of their residents. Thus,
the RAs who invest time and energy
in their residents and community
can have a profound impact on their
residents' learning.
numbers Tell a
story
There is a story about the RA
experience that all campus housing
professionals share. Whether they
were a resident assistant 5, 10, or
25 years earlier - even if they never
actually were one and only had to
supervise them - they know what it
means. It frames the expectations of
student staff, how they are trained, and
how they are mentored.
Yet to those who do not share
the student staff experience, the
value of the position is likely less
clear. Many faculty, administrators,
students, and parents have not held
student staff positions. They may not
understand how the position impacts
the students who hold it, the other
students who encounter the student
staff, or even the institution in general.
Unfortunately, the anecdotes from
student staff days or from experiences
working with student staff will only go
so far in demonstrating the true value
of these positions. However, these
anecdotes (see sidebar) combined with
national and local data can become a
powerful tool for transforming how
others view the position. Anecdotes
engage audiences and provide the
concrete visuals that create impact
and understanding. They also create
memories for those who hear them.
Data, on the other hand, show both
how common the positive outcomes
are and the wide array of impacts. Data
also demonstrate that the anecdote is
not an isolated incident or an unusual
experience but is instead more
representative of a larger set of student
staff and resident experiences. The
combination of anecdotes and data can
help transmit the value of the student
staff position. tS
