hall climate, or the effectiveness of
programmatic initiatives. Reports or
articles from these studies may lead to
co-authored publications that faculty
can add to their portfolios. Housing
professionals can also make efforts to
tie the residential academic programs
to academic disciplines and help
faculty integrate course content with
out-of-class experiences, especially in
course-based academic initiatives.
Because the promotion and tenure
structures at most institutions do not
reward faculty for partnerships with
student affairs professionals, some
faculty may want to be compensated
for their participation. Possible
compensations include a stipend, an
apartment, classroom or studio space,
or subsidized or full meal plans. It
might even be possible to fund a
course release for faculty helping to
plan new living-learning communities.
Ultimately, housing professionals
should consider themselves creators
of an environment in which both
students and faculty can flourish and
in which they experience mutually
inspiring interactions. Fitzpatrick
describes student affairs professionals
as experts who have theoretical
knowledge and practical expertise
about how students grow, develop,
and learn and can help faculty find
ways to innovate or revitalize teaching,
research, and service. Housing
professionals may be the ones
primarily responsible for reaching out
to faculty to create partnerships, but
they can be confident about sharing
their expertise in student development
theory, their knowledge of residence
hall staffing and emergency response,
their training in diversity and
social justice education, or their
understanding of leadership and civic
engagement.
If you create organizational
structures that support a growing
academic culture, if you understand
the cultural differences between
academic and student affairs, if you
support and seek to understand

faculty, and if you create sustainable
partnerships built on solid
interpersonal relationships, then you
will strengthen the academic mission
of your institution, facilitate student
learning, and create positive cultural
change. You will be minding the gap,
assured that there are new partners on
the other side who will engage in the
quest to improve student learning. tS
