The newest residence hall at Bridgewater
State University is a building with a plethora
of sustainable building practices that have
helped it to earn a LEED Gold certification.
Sustainability was kept at the forefront of
the planning process, focusing on energy
saving during the construction process. Based
on a zero net energy study conducted by
architects Perkins + Will, the construction of
Weygand Hall was guided by principles of
energy efficiency, including the process of
daylight harvesting. Weygand Hall features
an optimal window-to-wall ratio in order to
maintain adequate thermal values as well as
high visibility glass to admit more light. Green
roofs reduce heat gain.
The residence houses 500 upper-division
students within 170,000 square feet. The
rooms are a combination of suites and
living-learning community pods, which are
mini suites. In order to create large common
lounges in the hallways and work area,
Bridgewater took out the living room in
the pods and added the square footage to
living-learning areas for ample meeting and
studying space.
The building features a formal living
room that includes a widescreen TV, Blu-ray
DVD player, and an option for students to
connect their gaming systems. The main
lounges and game rooms are designed to
allow students to feel that they are indoors
and outdoors at the same time, as tall
windows surround the room with views
of peaceful scenery. Equipped with lounge
areas, meeting spaces, pool tables, and
TVs, the building offers students a variety of
activities to engage in at their leisure.
Most important, students were part of

the planning process. The architects created a
workshop in which students provided details on
what they would like to see in a residence hall:
lounge spaces and places to come together, quiet
spaces for studying and reading, and a courtyard
that connects another residence hall, the parking
garage, and University Park.
