for the role of hall directors. "As hall directors, we express
our ideas and brainstorm on numerous issues. Our senior
housing officer is open to hearing the processes that we use,
to learning new ideas, and to sharing other ideas with us."
Differences in work style, personalities, and backgrounds
create additional space for entry-level staff to educate
senior housing officers about the work they do and how
they approach that work. Because entry-level staff are often
close in age to students, they can be a reliable conduit
of contemporary knowledge and topics, keeping the rest
of the department abreast of changing tides and trends.
Joshua Parker, a residential communities coordinator at
Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, describes himself
as "Millennial to the bone," explaining that "Most of
the opportunities to educate my senior housing officer
come from our differences in personality. I give tips on
a daily basis about technology and pop culture trends."
Parker credits his senior housing officer for being good at
identifying staff strengths and placing staff in roles that
make the most sense for them, which for Parker means
operating the department's social media and online
functions. Because he has regular contact with the senior
housing officer at his institution, Parker doesn't think
there are many surprises about the operation of his job,
though his supervisor might be surprised by how Parker
perceives his own job. "For instance, my supervisor might
be surprised to hear that my favorite part of my job is being
on duty. He might be surprised about parts of my collateral
assignment or my daily interactions with students who are
not on our conduct, involvement, or wellness radar."

enior housing officers have
also noticed some significant
generational differences,
especially a swing in how the
fundamental work of residence
life is approached and what the
expectations of entry-level staff
are now compared to those of
previous cohorts. Torry Brouillard-Bruce, executive director
for housing and Greek life at University of the Pacific in
Stockton, California, has noticed changes in the entry-level
position during his career, changes that are manifested in
how staff approach their work and what their expectations
