Playing Host
Campus politics takes on a
whole new meaning when one
of the two major political parties
in the United States comes to
town. The Republican National
Convention, to be held in
Cleveland, Ohio, in July 2016,
means an influx of politicians,
aides, and security detail. And
all of those people need a place
to sleep.
Kent State University in
Ohio will play host to members
of the Secret Service during
the four-day convention. "We
don't anticipate this having
a significant impact on our
summer operations," says Chris
Tankersley, assistant director of
residence services.
Palcohol: The Other Alcohol
The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau recently approved
the sale of powdered alcohol in the United States. More commonly
known by its brand name, Palcohol is anticipated to hit shelves this
summer. Sold in packets, the powder is mixed with water to create a
liquid that has both comparable flavor and alcoholic content to traditional
liquor. Powdered alcohol has already been banned in several states with
legislation pending in others. Though the product would carry the same
legal restrictions as liquid alcohol in terms of sales, legislators moving to
ban the product are responding to concerns about the dangers of people
snorting or eating the substance, its easy portability, and the ability to
conceal the product.
Though there's been little formal reaction from colleges and
universities, concerns of residence life staff members echo those of
legislators. "I can see many different scenarios in which our students
will be using this product outside of the instructions. For me, the fact
that alcohol can now soon be found in a powder format, rather than
just liquid, raises many more questions than answers," says Brian
Hellwig, assistant director of residential safety and security at Kent State
University in Ohio. Hellwig believes that campus policies do not need
to be altered and that the form of alcohol - liquid or powder - should be
considered one and the same.
Baldwin Wallace University
in Berea, Ohio, is on the
short list of schools being
considered as a housing option
by the Republican National
Committee's host team. Two
tours have been given to date,
and the Republican Party is
considering use of all 600 beds
on Baldwin Wallace's campus,
which will have effects on
other summer programs. "The
university president and cabinet
have already approved our new
student orientation dates for
that summer to accommodate
the convention schedule,"
explains Robin Gagnow, director
of residence life and student
conduct.
