meetings, retreats, and philanthropic
events. With that in mind, decisions
will need to be made on whether
or not access should be given to all
members of the Greek organizations
or solely to chapter house residents.
Depending on the type of security
and door access features that are
in place (e.g., hard key versus card
key), limitations can be placed on
non-resident members in terms
of accessibility, and specific access
timeframes can be identified.
Additionally, policies will need to
be set on the upkeep and maintenance
of the facilities. As the institution
has invested a significant amount
of capital, it is a natural reaction to
apply blanket policies and restrictions
in order to maintain the same level
of quality for all facilities. On the
other hand, chapters will want to

individualize and customize exterior
and interior spaces of chapter
houses to promote organizational
brand identity. Identifying the
institution's level of tolerance for
modifications while maintaining
some form of parity between chapters
is critical. For example, setting up a
specific procedural process through
residence life to allow for approved
additions or modifications to the
interior or exterior of the house will
help maintain a level of control for
the institution, while moderating
chapter expectations. Chapter house
personalization is a great way to
engage both residential and nonresidential chapter members, as well
as alumni, in the Greek village project.
In addition, allowing chapters to make
some additions to the house, with
the caveat that unapproved additions

cannot be permanent and cannot
damage the facility, still allows the
chapters to feel a sense of ownership
of their space.

initiate the project. Once an institution
has prioritized on-campus Greek
housing, it should select and create a
steering committee to help drive and
manage the overall process. One of the
committee's first tasks will then be to
help define the appropriate program
for a Greek village.

evaluate expected demand, outline a
housing program, forecast potential
