30 percent reported that friends living
in on-campus apartments weighed
heavily in their decision.
Engaging apartment residents
in programming can be a significant
challenge, and the assessment results
support this, as more than 50 percent
reported never or rarely participating
in apartment-sponsored programs
and activities. However, the reward
for successfully engaging students in
programming can be huge. Those who
often participated in apartment programs
and activities were more satisfied and
felt that their experience contributed
to their learning when compared to
those who rarely or never participated.
Those involved in apartment programs
were more likely to say their apartment
experience contributed to their learning
(60 percent versus 36 percent) and would
recommend on-campus apartments
to other students (75 percent versus 52
percent).
When asked about their levels of
satisfaction with certain aspects of
facilities, between four and five out
of ten respondents rated most facility
aspects high, including such areas
as the condition of appliances (47
percent), of furniture (44 percent),
of bathrooms (45 percent), and of
common/community areas (47
percent). One highlight of these results
is that the factors related to apartment
condition and services/facilities had
the strongest relationship to overall
program effectiveness.
The main data points are not really
surprising. In fact, as we explore
the apartment experience at one
campus, we see that they support
the stories we often hear in our own
campus apartment communities.
At Indiana State University in Terre
Haute, apartment-style living options
were revamped in order to increase
not only occupancy but also student
involvement and satisfaction. Since
their construction in the 1960s, the
University Apartments had undergone
little preventative maintenance, and
occupancy was less than 60 percent.
While originally focused on providing
housing for married students with
families, the complex housed mostly
graduate students and upper-division
international students. Over the years,
the programmatic focus shifted away
from the apartment community to
first-year recruitment and retention.
This change in priority led to a
reallocation of staffing, funding, and
programmatic sources away from
the apartment community. This
shift in resources led to a significant
lack of satisfaction and community
involvement in the apartment
community.
