So how does one begin to change
the narrative of how we supervise? Like
most journeys to self-improvement,
it begins with self-reflection. Doing a
360°-style reflection on a supervisory
approach allows one to become aware
of where one excels as a supervisor
and where improvement is needed. It
requires being honest with staff about
what they need in the present and
to move forward. What is done with
that knowledge will dictate whether
or not one will ultimately succeed as
a supervisor. Some supervisors will
acknowledge their deficits and work
to remedy them, while others will
continue to cultivate toxic working
relationships.
During a session at the 2015
ACUHO-I Annual Conference &
Exposition in Orlando, Florida,
campus housing colleagues were
asked what they needed from their
supervisors. The responses varied

Wise Bosses":
Have strong opinions and weakly
held beliefs.
Do not treat others as if they are
idiots.
Listen attentively to your people; don't
just pretend to hear what they say.
Forgive people when they fail,
remember the lessons, and teach
them to everyone.
Fight as if you are right, and listen
as if you are wrong.
Do not hold grudges after losing
an argument. Instead, help the
victors implement their ideas with
all your might.
Know your foibles and flaws, and
work with people who correct and
compensate for your weaknesses.
Express gratitude to your people.
Ask a lot of good questions.
Ask others for help and gratefully
accept their assistance.
Do not hesitate to say, "I don't
know."
