when the mark is missed. The effort
is important because the supervisory
relationship is often the defining
element of an individual's departmental
and/or institutional experience.
Most imperative, as supervisors,
it is important to remember that part
of the responsibility is to create the
supervisors of tomorrow. The way
one works with and treats today's
supervisees will be mimicked or
rejected at great lengths in the future.
Therefore, the best supervisors
are those who lean in to the role,
embrace the responsibility, and create
environments in which they and their
staffs can be successful. They must be
willing to evaluate, adjust, and adapt
their supervisory practices. Failure to
do so will have a lasting impact on our
ability to retain professionals in our
field and hinder the overall success of
our housing departments.

Upward

Entry-level professionals look forward
to ascending through the hierarchy
of campus housing as though the
ascent is a silver bullet to solving the
problems and issues they encounter
in their current roles. What's not
always easy to see, though, is the
shade of green on that side of the
career fence and how each step
comes with its own challenges. For
example, as one moves from position
to position, those changes bring a
shifting political landscape as well as
increased expectations for navigating
it. Understanding the realities of what
supervisors, managers, directors, and
vice presidents face is an invaluable
tool for those who work for them and
critical knowledge for those who want
to successfully "manage up."
Although the term may
occasionally come with its share of
negative baggage, managing up is
becoming a more respected business
practice. Rosanne Badowski, co-author
with Roger Gittines of Managing Up:
How to Forge an Effective Relationship
with Those Above You, describes
managing up as stretching oneself
and going above and beyond assigned
tasks to enhance a manager's work.
Meanwhile, an article by Dana
Rousmaniere, "What Everyone Should
Know About Managing Up" in the
Harvard Business Review (January
23, 2015,) provides common tips for
successfully managing up, including
anticipating what a supervisor
needs, knowing the right way to
bring problems to a supervisor, and
understanding a supervisor's style and
preferences.
