and just because content is available
does not mean that anyone is rushing
to read it. "To engage meaningfully
you need to tap into something
deeper," says Hermann. "You have
to create content that is impactful
through timeliness and emotional
resonance. Engaging content should
feel less like hammering home a point
and more like allowing the emotion
to take your audience where you
want them to go." The CSU Live On
campaign utilizes fun, engaging, and
interactive content as the first point
of contact. Initial content launchpads
have included a humorous Buzzfeedstyle quiz that links students with the
residence hall that best matches their
personality and micro-video montages
showing human-focused scenes from
campus. This content is intended
more to engage students than to sell
the idea of living on campus. The
hope is that after laughing or feeling
nostalgic or imagining themselves

on campus, viewers will take the next
step by clicking on a link to find out
more on the website.
The division of student affairs at
the University of Alabama utilized
creative strategies to face a particularly
difficult challenge: to communicate a
recently instituted smoke-free policy
across campus in ways that would
not be considered negative. The
housing department created small
signs to attach to outdoor ashtrays
with messages that these ashtrays
were "breaking up" with the campus
and needed to "find their own way" or
"needed some time away." By allowing
the content itself to determine the
medium, the message was distributed
in a unique way that was more likely
to catch the attention of the intended
audience.
Perhaps more than ever before,
campus housing marketing
departments are being given the

opportunity to put their stamp on
the campus experience. Whether it is
capturing the attention of incoming
students, promoting programs to
current residents, or drawing students
away from off-campus options, the
marketing department has many
responsibilities to promote, educate,
and inform. And while the ways and
means of delivering the message may
change through the years, the value
of good content will never go out of
style. 
