nother category of mental models, referred to as The Knock on the Door, is all about who
is on the other side of the door when the knock occurs. In this case, the model focuses on
who is asking for help, who says they need something, and who shows up to the office.
Rather than focusing on the best story about a helicopter parent, for example, efforts are
centered on the most recent phone call or office visit related to this issue. When using this mental
model to consider roommate conflicts, facilities improvements, or staff issues, the focus falls on those
issues that have risen to the surface and demand immediate attention. Processes and procedures
are then developed to address these issues after they arise. Housing programs and residence life
professionals must be responsive to who literally and figuratively knocks on the door. Because these
situations are a standard part of the business of housing and residence life, it is necessary to have
processes in place to respond to them.
	 There	are	two	primary	issues	with	the	knock	
on	the	door	approach,	however.	The	first	is	that	
students	may	never	knock	on	the	door.	A	homesick	
student	may	fly	under	the	radar	until	he	or	she	is	
packing	the	car	and	leaving	the	institution.	Second,	
the	knock	on	the	door	may	occur	when	it	is	too	late	
to	provide	a	proper	response	or	when	the	situation	
has	become	an	emergency.	For	example,	a	pair	
of	fighting	roommates	may	not	ask	for	help	until	
the	situation	escalates	into	a	dangerous	conflict	
in	the	middle	of	the	night.	Or	the	plumbing	issue	
in	the	residence	hall	dining	center	may	not	be	

on	the	radar	until	the	pipe	bursts.	Some	issues,	
from	first-year	transition	to	facilities	concerns,	
can	be	mitigated	without	a	lasting	impact	but	only	
if	the	problems	are	spotted	before	they	become	a	
major	concern.	This	mental	model	is	best	used	
in	relationship	to	specific	situations	that	must	be	
addressed	in	the	moment,	in	contrast	to	working	
to	prevent	situations	in	the	first	place.	Proactive	
approaches,	from	roommate	and	community	
contracts	to	regular	facility	inspections,	can	
head	off	some	problems	and	make	better	use	of	
resources.

On May
5th, during
Southeastern
University's
Board of Trustees
bi-annual
meeting, it was
announced that
the university's
Southeastern University's Board of Trustees
College of
Business will be known as the Jannetides College of
Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership. The business
college will be housed in Southeastern's living/learning
facility, Buena Vida, which means "Good Life." This marks
the first day in history that a college of business will
be housed in this type of unique setting. Southeastern
University is a rising star, rapidly growing and making a
marked difference in campus living.

"It's the first of its kind that we know of," said James
Jannetides, founder and CEO of University Loft Company,
"a university that has an entire college inside a residence
hall." Located in the center of the campus, the 120,000 sq.
ft. Buena Vida building has three different food services
located within the building. Students can have meals,
meet their professors and never be late to class, all under

the same roof.
