The problem is it gives some a false
sense of better security. The lock is
still only as good as the mechanical
components. The key card alone does
not improve the security.
Eckardt: Restricting access into
buildings has increased. More doors
are locked 24/7 than 10 years ago.
Many halls are directing entry to one
central location rather than coming
and going through emergency entries.
There are cameras, cameras, and
more cameras both inside residence
halls and outside, monitoring exterior
entries and parking lots. There is more
education geared towards students and
the general campus community.
TS: What educational efforts have you
found to be most effective in helping
students understand and follow the
campus safety precautions?
Eckardt: With each new campus that
I work at, we have a safety and security
week within the first month of classes.
Safety and security week includes
fire drills, floor meetings covering
emergency procedures, health and
safety inspections (which begin this
week), and a hall-wide program. At
Florida Atlantic University [where
formerly she was director of housing
and residence life] the residence hall
safety and security week turned into
a campus initiative, with September
being identified as safety month.
During this month they held a safety
fair, created a tornado/hurricane
house, offered cyber safety programs,
and conducted late night tours to
check lighting, tree and shrubbery
height, etc.
Corey: We have implemented several
initiatives, one of which is our NASPA
Knowledge Community awardwinning Fire Safety Online Module
which is required for all residents.

TALKING STICK
At the beginning of the semester, we
enroll all residents in our fire safety
course through our institution's
course management system. It
contains a brief video and quiz
regarding topics such as evacuation
procedures, putting out grease fires,
and using a fire extinguisher.
A new initiative implemented by
our Office of Emergency Management
is the Livesafe App. Through this app,
students can secure safety escorts, see
crime alerts in the campus geographic
area, text our campus dispatch center,
and more. One of my favorite features
is the Safewalk module, which allows
users to invite friends or family to
"watch" them, via GPS monitoring,
walk from point A to point B. This
feature also provides an estimated
time of arrival. I think our students
will appreciate the availability of this
module within the app. It is new,
and we are rolling it out this fall, so I
cannot yet speak to its effectiveness in
educating our students.
