Sober Housing
Is Law in New
Jersey
In 2015, New Jersey's
Governor Chris Christie
signed a law that requires
all state institutions to offer
sober housing if at least
25 percent of their student
population lives on campus.
The law gives institutions
four years to comply,
but several New Jersey
campuses already had
sober housing or they were
already planning to offer
it. Talking Stick checked in
with Lisa Laitman, director
of the Alcohol and Other
Drug Assistance Program
at Rutgers, The State
University of New Jersey
in New Brunswick. She
notes that sober housing is
"much more complicated
for collegiate recovery
programs to implement,"
primarily because there are
typically few to no resources
(money and staff) for the
program. Furthermore, she
explains that the campus
community's regard for
this type of housing and the
group of students seeking
it need to be built up before
the program is - and that
can take years. "Programs
have a high rate of success
when we provide them
[students] with exactly what
they need: a peer group.
This requires resources
and people to understand
that. This has the ability to
change [campus] culture as
a whole."

Longwood Hosts V.P. Debate
The weather turned out to be perfect for a massive outdoor watch party
at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, as thousands of students,
faculty, staff, and alumni gathered on the grass in front of a huge screen
tuned to the 2016 U.S. vice presidential debate - happening just steps
away on their campus. The moment was a culmination of two years of
work both inside and outside the classroom. Longwood faculty designed
an unprecedented 30-plus courses that integrated debate themes and
served as de facto pilots for a new general education curriculum. More
than 1,000 volunteers signed on, and students were matched with roles
that complemented their study. Still more visitors showed campus spirit
behind numerous network stages where live broadcasts highlighted
Longwood's natural splendor. Building from its mission of forming citizen
leaders, Longwood feels it has raised the bar for engagement for their
students and has left a legacy that will span generations.
