that gave students a sense of
enclosure and privacy without
isolating them from the larger
environment. Nearly all of the
students had cited privacy as a
reason for not using the spaces,
from a lack of visual privacy to
hearing or creating noise, yet they
also want to feel connected to the
community."
The challenge is not unique to
Sam Houston. At the University
of Missouri in Columbia, Frankie
Minor, director of residential life,
says that his campus has worked
hard to create enough study
spaces in their halls. "Residents
don't want to leave their homes,
but they often want to leave the
distractions in their rooms for
a comfortable and convenient
place to study alone or in small
groups," he says. "Our Freshman
Interest Groups, where students
take classes together and live
together, really like these spaces
in their communities where they
can study for shared courses or
work on group projects. In the
past, study spaces were either
combined with social spaces,
creating conflict, or tucked in outof-the-way spaces or basements."
Now, however, they "are located
in the middle of student living
spaces, many of them with
majestic, albeit sometimes
distracting, views."

Based on student feedback,
the new spaces are working. Firstyear student Mark Kohl says that
"the study rooms are a great place
to be around other people who are
studying. It gives you a sense that
everyone is striving for the same
goal." Meanwhile, Alexis Pearson,
a junior and residential life peer
advisor, notes that "the study
rooms are a great place to seclude
yourself and feel productive,
especially when other residents
come and join in the productivity.
Being around others who are
studying gives off a great sense of
togetherness and encouragement,
